The $200 million sale of Nokia’s wireless-modem business, which includes LTE, HSPA, and GSM technologies and patents, was announced Tuesday. In a joint statement, Nokia and Renesas said they had formed a long-term alliance to develop modem technologies for HSPA+/LTE initiatives. (LTE is the long-term evolution of 3G, sometimes called 4G).

Nokia also noted that divesting itself of the business would help it focus on its core handset and services businesses.

When the Poor Clares see the messages, they pray for the people they read about.

It took months of negotiation for the Goldsmiths team to persuade the nuns to try out the technology. They have always prayed for the outside world, receiving requests for help by post, phone and very recently email via one solitary computer. But Goldie, with its rolling headlines, has made the nine nuns very contemporary contemplatives.

“It is not there because we’re desperate for news,” says Sister Paul, one of the Poor Clares. “We are here for prayer, for channelling people’s needs to God.”

The device has changed its designers too. “I tend towards scientific scepticism and think prayer doesn’t have an impact,” says project co-ordinator Bill Gaver. “But there is also a spirituality about me, which thinks it does. This is not a dispassionate thing. We’re certainly not humouring the nuns.”

The Obama administration has revamped and relaunched USA.gov, the online home for federal services and information. Dave McClure, associate administrator at the General Services Administration, oversaw the site’s revamp and spoke about the redesign and dozens of new Web applications, or “apps,” for mobile phone users:

Q. Why did USA.gov need a redesign?

A. The Web site itself is 10 years old, and it’s gone through some upgrades, but it’s basically been created around information. Now we’re trying to transform it so it’s built around citizens.

Q. What kind of audience research was done to determine what was needed?

A. We engaged the public online on what they found useful about USA.gov. The engagement ranged from design to format to functionality to presentation to relevance, so we did a pretty extensive dialogue to get ideas.

They cracked open the phone’s shell and started analyzing the new model’s components, trying to unmask the identity of Apple’s main suppliers. These “teardown reports” provide a glimpse into a company’s manufacturing.

What the latest analysis shows is that the smallest part of Apple’s costs are here in Shenzhen, where assembly-line workers snap together things like microchips from Germany and Korea, American-made chips that pull in Wi-Fi or cell phone signals, a touch-screen module from Taiwan and more than 100 other components.

But what it does not reveal is that manufacturing in China is about to get far more expensive. Soaring labor costs caused by worker shortages and unrest, a strengthening Chinese currency that makes exports more expensive, and inflation and rising housing costs are all threatening to sharply increase the cost of making devices like notebook computers, digital cameras and smart phones.
